Claimant to the French throne who served with the Union army in the American Civil War and wrote an 8-volume history of the conflict.
Autograph Letter signed: "Philippe Comte de Paris", 1p with blank integral leaf, 4¾x7¼. "Chateau d'Eu (France), 1884 July 18. On personal letterhead to an unnamed general. In full: "Allow me to introduce by this letter my friend the Vicomte L. de Janyé [?] who sails for America with Mr. Gordon Bennett. I shall be very grateful to you if you are kind enough to give him any information which may be useful to him for his visit to the United States. Believe me, my dear General, yours truly". Louis Philippe Albert, the Duke of Orleans and Count of Paris (1838-1894), the grandson of France's last reigning monarch - King Louis Philippe - acquired a claim to the French throne after the death of his father in 1842. Exiled to England after King Louis Philippe was deposed in 1848, he joined the Union cause in the American Civil War, serving on the staff of General George McClellan with the rank of Captain. In this capacity he was actively involved in several battles of McClellan's Peninsular Campaign of 1862. As US-French relations deteriorated following the introduction of French troops into Mexico, the Count returned to Europe in 1863. He returned to France in 1871, living quietly there until the French Republic banished all claimants to the throne from the country in 1886. Between 1874 and 1889, the Count published an 8-volume history of the American Civil War. Gordon Bennett (Jr., 1841-1918), the owner of the New York Herald, resided mostly in Paris after 1877. No information is available on the Viscount traveling with him. Mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:COMTE DE PARIS (LOUIS PHILIPPE ALBERT D'ORLEANS) See more listings in our MILITARY (2,442) category.
