General - American 1850s Era John Ryan Cobalt Blue Excelsior Mineral Water out of Savannah, Ga. Hand blown with a hand applied blob finish and Iron Pontil Base. This glass bottle features the quality glass blowing craftsmanship by the Historically storied UNION GLASSWORKS of Kensington North Philadelphia, PA. The works were located at Queen St. on the Delaware River. BIMAL

Condition Report -Bottle is in good overall condition,no cracks or stains with very good glass clarity. Blob lip is in excellent condition, no issues. It is noted there are some scratches, scrapes, pitting, fish eye bruises and abrasions on the glass due to age, manufacture and circulation use. Having said that, this glass displays really nicely. The base has a moderate kick up with a light yellowish pontil rod residue remaining. Embossing is a good strong strike, clearly legible, with some moderate high point/case wear on the letters noted, including a piece of glass missing on the "R" on the word "Never" . The base has light shelf wear. Some entrapped bubbles are noted in the glass.

Embossing - Front embossing "JOHN RYAN' in arch form, then "EXCELSIOR-MINERAL WATER-SAVANNAH GA". Back embossed "UNION GLASS WORKS" in arch form, then "PHILA-THIS BOTTLE-IS-NEVER SOLD"

Glassworks - Union Glass Works (1847-1857) Philadelphia, PA.


Color - Cobalt Blue.

Size - 7" Tall and 2-5/8" at the base.

Circa - 1852 - 1858.


Age -Approx. 169 years old.John Ryan, a prolific Georgia soda water pioneer, was in Business from 1852-1879 in Savannah, Ga. John Ryan dated some of his bottles every 7 years, hence 1852, 1859, 1866 markings.

Summary - A Unique piece of History of the days gone by. Would be a fine addition to any Antique Bottle/Glass collection.
