The United States Colored Troops numbered over 200,000 men by the end of the Civil War and despite widespread belief that they would be too servile to fight, they proved to be determined and fearless, fighting for their right to be free men.An original Civil War era Clothing and Camp Equipment Statement issued for the men of Company C, 77th US Colored Infantry, Sept 30, 1865, listing 22 musicians, noncom officers and privates by name along with items issued to them incl cap letters, bugle insignia, haversacks, canteens, etc. The 8 x 12\" ink statement is signed and approved by 1st Lt George L Faxon, 77th USCI, as commander of H company, Sept 30, 1865. Minor edge wear, Overall VG. Comes w service info for Lt Faxon, a Bridgewater, Massachusetts teacher who served with his men until 1867.The 77th United States Colored Infantry was formed from the Corps de Afrique, serving in Louisiana from 1863 to the Wars End when it was organized into the 10th US Colored Heavy Artillery, guarding Fort St Phillip, Jefferson City and on occupation duty at Forts Macomb and Pike. I got this from Lt Faxon\'s estate.
