Port Royal PlantationConstruction of this fifteen acre fortification began in 1861. Located on the old Coggins Point Plantation, the fort was named in honor of Brigadier General Thomas West Sherman, brother of General William Tecumseh Sherman....on 26
September 1864 General Order #139, Headquarters, Department of the South, Hilton Head, S.C. had been promulgated by W.L.M. Burger, Assistant Adjutant General by command of Major General John G. Foster, \'The works within the entrenchments at Hilton Head will be known as Fort Sherman, after Brigadier General Thomas W. Sherman, US Volunteers, formerly commanding this department.\"Records, 10 May 1864-25 July 1870 of the United States Colored Troops, 26th Regiment. Thirteen manuscripts, 10 May 1864-25 July 1870 and undated, document activities of the Twenty-sixth Regiment, United States Colored Troops in South Carolina both during and immediately after the Civil War.The collection includes receipts and memorandums regarding supplies, back pay and the disability pension of Regimental commander, Col. William B. Guernsey. A 17 July 1865 letter written by Guernsey from Pocotaligo to Maj. W.L.M. Burger protests an inspection report in which he was alleged to present \"an unsoldierly appearance.\"Another, 20 September 1865, from Maj. C.W. Thomas, Hilton Head, informs Burger that he had \"the honor\" of furnishing a damaging report against the officers of the Twenty-sixth, specifically Colonel Guernsey, for failing to turn in tents to the quartermaster that were subsequently stolen. headquarters United States forces, Tybee Island, Ga., April 11--4 A. M.
Flag-Officer Du Pont having, in compliance with a request from the Major-General Commanding the Department of the South, directed a detachment of sailors from the frigate Wabash, under command of Lieutenant John S. Irwin, United States Navy, to report to Commander C. R. P. Rodgers, United States Navy, for service on one of the batteries, they are assigned to battery Sigel, just vacated by two companies of the Forty-sixth New-York State Volunteers, and will take charge of the three thirty-pounder Parrotts and one twenty-four pounder James on the right of that battery.The balance of the battery will remain with Captain Turner, United States Army, Commissary of Subsistence, and will be served by a detachment of the Eighth Maine regiment, under Captain McArthur.By command of:Brig-Gen. Q. A. Gilmore. W. L. M. Burger, First Lieut.-Col. Engineers, Acting Assistant Adjutant-General.Measures have been taken to carry out the object of the order relating to the formation of a colored corps. Col. LITTLEFIELD is now at Washington on business connected with that subject. By referring to General Orders No. 8, hereby annexed, it will be seen that Capt. W.L.M. BURGER, the popular and efficient Assistant Adjutant-General to Gen. GILLMORE, is assigned to the charge of the Bureau for enlisting and organizing colored troops in the department.
