Captain George Sokalski was the first Polish-American to graduate West Point, in the Class of 1861. He served on the Frontier and in over 50 battles of the Civil War, and died at Fort Laramie, Wyoming soon after the War. An original Civil War Discharge issued for Corporal Lorin Shephard, 2nd Ohio Battery, issued August 9, 1865 at Columbus, Ohio, signed by Captain George Sokalski, 2nd US Cavalry, as Mustering Officer. 1p 8 x 11" ptd/ink, on heavy tan paper w US Federal Eagle illus.Comes w service info- Corporal Shepard served in the 2nd Ohio Artillery Battery which saw action in , Arkansas & Mississippi and in the Red River Campaign. Age stains, A scarce signature for Captain Sokalski, a hard fighting Civil War cavalryman and colorful Frontier character.1p 8 x 11" edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. Comes with service info and a postwar pension card for Corporal Shephard's widow.
