Brothers George and James Elliott enlisted for the War in 1861 and saw 3 years of action with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, both as gunners and as infantrymen from the 1862 Richmond Campaign & Frederickburg to Petersburg. An Original Civil War Letter from George F Elliott at Fort Blenker, Dec 7, 1862 to his Mother and Sister re their financial situation as "Edward will not be contributing" (16 year old Brother Edward of the 6th Connecticut deserted and abandoned their widowed mother). George begs mother to avoid heavy work as she is "in decline". On page 4 he writes additionally to "Sister"- he regrets she has had to leave school to care for Mother.He writes that he has enjoyed some of the "porker" hung in the Family parlor on Thanksgiving Day. Fort Blenker was built at Arlington Virginia in1862 to protect the approaches along Four Mile Run to the City along what is now Route 7. The fort was renamed Fort Reynolds in 1863 after General John Reynolds was killed at Gettysburg. Comes w service info for the Elliott Brothers of Manchester, Connecticut. 4pp 8 x 5" ink.
