Brothers George and James Elliott were sons of a Colt Armory worker, enlisted for the War in 1861 and saw 3 years of action with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery , from the 1862 Richmond campaign & Frederickburg to Petersburg and finally the Assault on Fort Stedman and the Appomattox Campaign An Original Civil War Letter from George at Fort Blenker Feb 28, 1863 to his mother- he and brother Janes are well, he advises Mother to be careful of paying debts owed by their late father (Their father, in poor health had spent his savings for attorneys fees, trying to id their youngest brother Edwin who had deserted the Colt Rifle Regiment). Regarding Father\'s \"Chest and Tools\", to leave them with Mr offerwell, an honest man, if neither he nor James survive the War she may sell them as she wishes. He reports he has visited Washington- the Smithsonian Institute, the House of Representatives in session and Senate , admired the Capitol\'s paintings and statuary and visited a cousin. He ends the letter since \"Today is Muster Day\". Fort Blenker was built at Arlington In 1862 to protect the approaches along Four Mile Run to the City of Arlington, Virginia, along what is now Route 7, near Fort Reynolds Park. The fort was renamed Fort Reynolds in 1863 after General John Reynolds, killed at Gettysburg.Comes w service info for the Elliott Brothers of Manchester, Connecticut. 4pp 8 x 5\" ink.
