Schulz draws Snoopy, Lantz draws Woody, on a First Day Cover signed by both, and framed in the Gallery of History style to 13x17.
First Day Cover signed: \"Schulz\" and \"Walter Lantz\", 6¼x3½. FDC honoring American Trees, 15-cent stamp picturing the gray birch affixed, postmarked Hot Springs National Park, AR[kansas], October 8, 1978, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. To the left of their signatures, Schultz has drawn the head of Snoopy, the loveable beagle from his comic strip, \"Peanuts\", and Lantz has drawn Woody Woodpecker, the pesky bird with the raucous laugh that he created in 1940. CHARLES M. SCHULZ (1922-2000), a freelance cartoonist with \"The Saturday Evening Post\" (1948-1949), originally titled his single-panel cartoon about life\'s funny happenings \"Li\'l Folks\". It debuted as a panel strip on October 2, 1950 as \"Peanuts\", a name Schulz disliked. Each strip was personally drawn, written, inked and lettered by \"Sparky\" Schulz, who created the strips in his office at One Snoopy Place and drank coffee at the Warm Puppy snack Bar. He died on February 12, 2000, the evening before his last \"Peanuts\" strip appeared in the Sunday editions of newspapers. Before Schulz\'s death, the strip was reproduced in a number of popular books, and his loveable characters were also seen on television and in feature films as well as on a wide variety of licensed \"Peanuts\" products. Schulz\' award-winning work - he was Cartoonist of the Year in 1955 and again in 1965 - is still syndicated as \"Classic Peanuts\". WALTER LANTZ (1900-1994), who was working in film animation from age 16, took over Universal Film\'s animation department in 1926. In 1935, the organization separated from Universal and became Walter Lantz Studios. Lantz was already producing popular movie cartoons, including Oswald Rabbit and Andy Panda, when a noisy woodpecker at his wooded honeymoon cottage inspired him to produce his most popular character. Woody first appeared in 1940 in the Andy Panda cartoon, \"Knock, Knock\". Lantz produced Woody Woodpecker shorts until 1975. The woodpecker\'s unforgettable laugh, originated by Mel Blanc, was furnished by Lantz\'s wife, Grace Stafford (who had auditioned anonymously), after 1950. In 1979, Lantz received a special Academy Award for \"bringing joy and laughter to every part of the world.\" He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986; Woody Woodpecker got his own star in 1990. Lightly rippled at cachet. Slightly soiled at lower left margin, minor stain nicks lower edge of stamp. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 13¼x16½.See more material from these signers:CHARLES M. SCHULZ WALTER LANTZ See more listings in our ART & ARCHITECTURE (1,250) category.
