CHARLES DARWIN, HAVING JUST PUBLISHED: The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex ACKNOWLEDGES RECEIVING A LETTER FROM ONE OF HIS SCIENTIFIC COLLEAGUES
DARWIN, CHARLES. (1809-82). British scientist and founder of evolutionary theory. Manuscript Note Boldly Signed: “Ch. Darwin / [Down – written in Emma’s, his wife\'s hand] / Oct[ober] 17”, no year. [but 1871 — from postal cancelations]. Penned on the verso of an imprinted UK 1/2 penny Postcard. Addressed to: “E[dward] Bartlett, 70 Delancey Street, Regent’s Park, N.W. [London]”. Postal cancellations for London and Beckenham and a D13 Oval cancellation over postage imprint on recto. The text of the note is in the hand of Darwin’s wife, Emma. The note reads: “I am greatly obliged for your note received this morning\" --then the note is boldly signed by Darwin himself: \"Ch. Darwin”.
At this time the correspondence between Darwin and Bartlett concerned Egyptian geese, and how they feed while their heads are under water. Very fine condition, and a fine, relatively inexpensive example of his signature.
