EXHIBITION STADIUM

Exhibition Stadium was a historic multi-purpose venue located at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It served as a major sports and entertainment facility from its opening in 1959 until its closure in 1989. Initially designed to host events for the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), it became known for its adaptability, accommodating a wide range of activities, from football and baseball games to concerts and large-scale exhibitions.

The stadium had a unique horseshoe shape with open ends, providing versatile space for different types of events. Its capacity varied depending on the configuration, ranging from approximately 33,000 for football to around 47,000 for baseball. This flexibility allowed Exhibition Stadium to be used by several notable sports teams, most famously the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Toronto Blue Jays, Major League Baseball\'s (MLB) first Canadian team.

The Toronto Argonauts called Exhibition Stadium home for decades, starting in 1959. During this period, the stadium became synonymous with the Argos\' games, drawing large crowds for CFL matches. The stadium\'s open design and proximity to Lake Ontario often resulted in unpredictable weather conditions, which became a hallmark of games played there.

In 1977, Exhibition Stadium became the inaugural home of the Toronto Blue Jays, marking the start of Major League Baseball in Canada. The Blue Jays played their first MLB game at Exhibition Stadium in 1977, famously under snowy conditions, reflecting the challenges of the stadium\'s open design. Despite these weather-related quirks, the Blue Jays developed a dedicated fan base and achieved early success while playing there, including winning their first American League East title in 1985.

Beyond sports, Exhibition Stadium was a prominent venue for concerts and other events. It hosted performances by legendary artists like The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie, making it a popular entertainment destination in Toronto.

Exhibition Stadium was ultimately closed and demolished in 1999, as newer and more modern facilities, like the Rogers Centre, became available. Despite its closure, the stadium holds a significant place in Toronto\'s sports and entertainment history, remembered for its unique charm, versatility, and role in establishing professional baseball and football in the city.
