Bronze table medal \"St. George\'s Fortress. Russia-Georgia 200 years\" case1783 St. George\'s TreatiseThe material is bronze. The diameter is about 8+ centimeters1983THE ST. GEORGE\'S TREATISE ON THE TRANSITION OF EASTERN GEORGIA UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF RUSSIA HAS BEEN SIGNEDAugust 4, 1783On July 24 (August 4), 1783, a \"friendly treaty\" was concluded between Russia and the Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti (Eastern Georgia) in Georgievsk (North Caucasus).
During the Russian-Turkish War of 1768-1774, the Tsar of Eastern Georgia (Kartli and Kakheti) Heraclius II and the king of Western Georgia (Imereti) Solomon opposed the Turks on the side of Russia. Russia\'s victory over Turkey and the concluded Russian-Turkish Kyuchuk-Kaynardzhi peace treaty of 1774 significantly eased the situation of the Georgian lands subject to the Turks — the payment of tribute to the sultan by the Imeretian Kingdom was canceled. However, the foreign policy situation around the Georgian kingdoms remained tense.
On December 21, 1782, the Kartli-Kakheti tsar Irakli II appealed to Catherine II with a request to accept Georgia under the patronage of Russia. Catherine II, seeking to strengthen Russia\'s position in Transcaucasia, agreed.
The agreement was concluded on July 24 (August 4), 1783 in the fortress of Georgievsk (North Caucasus) and signed on behalf of Russia by the general-in—chief, Prince Pavel Potemkin, on behalf of Georgia - by Princes Ivan Bagration and Garsevan Chavchavadze.
The document consisted of 13 main and 4 separate articles. The Georgian tsar Irakli II recognized the patronage of Russia and refused an independent foreign policy, pledged his troops to serve the Russian Empress. Catherine II, for her part, vouched for the preservation of the integrity of the possessions of Heraclius II. Georgia was granted full internal autonomy. Articles 8, 9, 10 and 11 equalized the rights of the Georgian privileged estates (nobles, clergy and merchants) with the Russians. 4 separate articles of the agreement were of great importance. According to them, Russia pledged to protect Georgia in the event of war, and when conducting peace negotiations, to insist on the return to the Kartli-Kakhetian kingdom of possessions that had long belonged to it (but were rejected by Turkey). The main political significance of the St. George\'s Treatise was that it established a protectorate of Russia in relation to Eastern Georgia, and also sharply weakened the positions of Iran and Turkey in Transcaucasia, formally destroying their claims to this territory.
