This is an 1897 Pattern Officer\'s saber. It is rare in that it is a complete kit with a named owner, in this case it is General D.F. Norrington. Gen Norrington had this made in 1953 for his promotion to Colonel and taking Command of the Brigade of Gurkhas. Additionally, the blade is a quasi history of his service as it includes the King Edward II Regiment, his 1st Regimental assignment as a newlieutenant.
I came by this thru his nephew (we shared an office at the Pentagon) Gen Norrington didn\'t have any direct heirs so it came to him. His nephew did say hewas one tough SOB and fought with the Gurkhas during WW II. Cross Kukri blades are engraved on the blade.
I will say this is one of the prizes in my collection. Gen Norrington had the sword made with his initials engraved on the blade and on the outside of the sword case. The kit comes with a leather sword case, a swede sword/scabbard bag and two scabbards, one polished steel for parade and one leather covered for war, and the original leather tassel. The sword and both scabbards are pristine, no rust, dents or scuffs. The shark skin grip shows a little wear from parade use, but still has loads of grip. The pictures don\'t do the blade justice, the trees above my deck give a green reflection and the Vasoline I use to lube the metal causes a grayish look on the guard, but all metal work is highly reflective and very bright and shinny.
The 1897 pattern sword made byappointment to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sword cutlers, Wilkinson Sword (England\'s premier sword maker for over 250 years) is one of the most collectible blades on the market, much less in a complete kit with a named owner. This would be a jewel in any collection. This would not be here if I had any heirs who wanted this. Any questions, please ask.
