This is an olddocument, dated October 6th(I think), 1825,withthe location unidentified,but being either Bolton or Boston,Massachusetts.
Thedocumentis handwritten, andis a receiptfor a payment of $24.16 to a man namedCharles Bennett, in return for \"tending horses(for) two months & 6 days\". Bennett appearsto have signed this receipt.
The payment was made by a business calledthe \"Lancaster & Bolton Stage Company.\"
This business, more frequently refered to asthe \"Bolton & Lancaster Stage Company\",wasowned by General Amory Holman(1796-1876),alawyer and a general in the militia.
Holman was involved in local politics, and wasawell known local businessman. He marriedFanny Whitcomb in 1819, and the couple hadfour sons.Holman ran several profitablebusiness ventures in the town of Bolton, whichis near Boston. Holman ran the Holman Innfrom 1818 through1858, was involved as atrader in the mulberry and silkworm industry,and owned a small shoe shop asthe largestshareholder in the Bolton Shoe Company.
Holman’s chief interest, however, was hisstagecoach business,Gen. Amory Holman’sBolton & Lancaster Stage Company.
