Historic Collectible 1976 Bicentennial "Larry Kerwin's Rathskeller Pub at the Dunellen Hotel" Dunellen, New Jersey!Built in 1869 as a private home, The Gray residence was bought and remodeled into a hotel by Lawrence and Michael Kerwin. Twenty seven rooms were constructed and a family hotel and restaurant named the Charlotte Inn was opened. In 1929 the Charlotte Inn name was changed to the Dunellen Hotel. Featuring a bar called The Rathskeller, and restaurant serving the likes of Clark Gable, greatest male film star of the 1930’s, and the Playmates, a 1950’s hit-single band that got its start in the Rathskeller.Walter Stone, writer for Jackie Gleason, was so enthralled by the Hotel’s alluring atmosphere that he wrote an episode in which Jackie Gleason petitioned to buy it in a 1954 episode of The Honeymooners.
In 1930 when miniature golf was the rage, there was a course on the hotel grounds. A prized refuge during Prohibition, This Old House-The Charlotte Inn, and now, the Dunellen Hotel, Restaurant & Rathskeller was a first home, a second home and a welcomed retreat for almost 150 years.
Steeped in history, the Dunellen Hotel was a landmark of the past.
Lawrence P. Kerwin Proprietor of Dunellen Hotel, a true Dunellener, graduated from St. Johns and Dunellen High School in 1942. He was to attend Colgate University but instead volunteered for the 1st Division Marines and was soon active in the Pacific, receiving two Purple Hearts at both Peleliu and Okinawa.
The hotel was previously run by his mother and father since 1937. The world famous hotel was known for its signature pot pies, its frequent mention on the Jackie Gleason Show, and featured articles in the New York Times and Thursday Night at the Dunellen Hotel, a phrase that elicits smiles and memories to thousands.
