Biography

Chaim Berlin was the son of Naftali ZviYehuda Berlin, the Netziv, and his first wife.[3]Berlin initiallylearned with his father.[4]

His connection to theHouse of Davidas adescendant of RabbiMeir Katzenellenbogen, the Maharam of Padua, is detailedinThe Unbroken Chain.[5]

Berlin lived inValozhyn,Belarus,where he was head of arabbinicalcourt. In 1891, his father appointed him head of theValozhynyeshiva. There was controversy regarding thisappointment as many students felt that RabbiChaim Soloveitchikwas more deserving to head the yeshiva.[6]

He was married to his first wife from5608/1847 until her passing 5642/1882. He subsequently was married fromapproximately 5644/1884 until the passing of his second wife 5649/1889.[4]

Berlin leftRussiain 1906 and settled inJerusalem. He became theassistantchief rabbioftheAshkenazicommunitywith RabbiShmuelSalant. He also assisted Rabbi Salant in the management of the RabbiMeir Baal Haneis Salant charity founded by Rabbis Zundel and Salant in 1860.After Rabbi Salant died at the end of 1909, Berlin led the Jerusalem Rabbinateand the Rabbi Meir Baal Haneis Salant charity until his death in 1912 (5673).[7][8]

He died at age 81 on 13 Tishrei 5663(September 24, 1912) and was buried in theMount of Olives Jewish CemeteryinEast Jerusalem.[9]

Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin, established inBrooklyn, New Yorkin 1904 asYeshiva TiferesBachurim, was renamed for Rabbi Chaim Berlin in 1914, at the suggestion ofhis brother, RabbiMeir Berlin(Bar-Ilan).[10]

His major extensive writings were notpublished for nearly a century after his passing.
