The Petoskey Stone is an ancient fossil found only in certain areas of Northern Michigan. Born from an ancient rugose coral, Hexogonaria percarinata, the Petoskey Stone formed 350 million years ago as the glaciers moved across what used to be a coral reef during the Devonian period. In 1787, an Odawa princess gave birth to a son, Petosegay, whose name meant “rays of light”. The town of Petoskey, Michigan was named in Petosegay’s honor. Since the fossilized coral is commonly found in that area, it became known as the Petoskey Stone. It’s recognized for the distinct hexagonal shapes with “rays” coming from the center eyes. It is easiest found when wet, as the pattern fades and looks like plain limestone when dry. The challenge elevates the reward!

The Petoskey Stone is the state stone of Michigan and every Michigander has fond memories of combing the beaches looking for that distinct pattern peeking out at them.

All of my stones have been hand selected by me, walking miles and miles of the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. They are hand polished using either sandpaper with lots of elbow grease or on my lapidary wheels. There are no sprays or lacquers used to create this beautiful finish.

Maybe you are looking for a memento to fondly remember your summers in Northern Michigan or a piece of your childhood. Maybe you are a rockhound like me or a jewelry designer. Whatever the reason, know that there was genuine excitement when this stone was plucked from the sand and waves and that it was carefully worked to display its natural beauty. Enjoy!
