1947- 2007

BarryLongboat resided at Six Nations Reserve. He first became interested in stonecarving in 1971 driven by its economic potential. He was primarily self-taught.His wife and co-creator Bobbi had experience carving wooden stirring paddlesand cooking ladles. Her father Peter Thomas was an accomplished carver.

Togetherthe couple explored soapstone as a medium, each working on the same piece atvarious stages in its evolution. These collaborative creations vary in sizefrom small tourist type items to gallery worthy sculpture. Both their stonesculptures and medallions incorporate animals, Haudenosaunee legends, figures, and symbols. Eagles are an especially popular subject for interpretation. Thebases of Longboat sculptures are intentionally left in their rough form todistinguish their work and to reference its source. Bobbi also continued tocarve wood, producing maple corn soup paddles, cedar pipestems, and hickorylacrosse sticks.

Thetwo were members of the Independent Indian Handicrafters organizationandmarketed their work through Min\'s Indian Crafts (Ohsweken, Ontario); Turtle N\'Dove, and Iroqrafts (Ontario). Their work has been presented at Six NationsIndian Pageant (Ohsweken, 1972 - 1978); Six Nations Powwow; Canadian IndianVillage (Brantford, 1978); Iroquois Confederacy Arts & Crafts Exhibition(Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, 1972) and the Woodland Cultural Centre(Brantford, Ontario).

BothBarry and Bobbi were invested in passing traditional ways onto the nextgeneration. Barry coached youth sports teams and taught stone carving at School#6 on the Six Nations Reserve in 1975. The couple also served on the Reserve\'ssteering committee for language preservation.

Theirwork is in private collections and the permanent collections of the IroquoisMuseum (Howes Cave, NY) and the National Museum of the American IndianSmithsonian (Washington, DC).
