The front of the brick is inscribedBARNSTABLE BRICK WALK 1996. The backside is stamped S+H, likely for Stiles andHart Brick Company of Bridgewater, MA.

Dimensions areapprox.7-3/8 long x 3-1/4 wide x 2-1/4 thick

The “S” on the backhas some wear. The bottom left corner is not complete; it appears to be more ofa manufacturing flaw than a chip. There is a crack on the back running throughthe bottom of the brick Photos show all sides of the brick. Please look at themfor a better description of the flaws.

These promotionalbricks were displayed at various venues throughout Barnstable Village, MA in1996 in order to entice people to buy personally inscribed bricks to raisefunds for new brick walkways. See newsstory below:

The Barnstable Village Improvement Association (BVIA), theorganization driving the redevelopment effort, began early in 1996 sidewalksfrom the Trayser Museum west to Old Jail Lane, which is the town controlledportion of Route 6A. The Town of Barnstable would normally install concrete andasphalt sidewalks, but through the fund-raising work of the BVIA, the sidewalksthrough the village center will be paved with brick.

The goals of the Barnstable Village Improvement Associationinclude not only brick sidewalks, but also a walking botanical garden ofhistorically significant trees and several benches.

The five-foot brick pathways will replace the crumblingasphalt and concrete sidewalks that are 20 feet wide in many areas of thevillage. In order to pay for the brick sidewalks, the BVIA sold inscribedbricks that will be installed along the new walkways. More than 1,100 brickshave been sold.
