Babingtonite, a Calcium, Iron, Manganese Inosilicate, is fairly rare, even though it is a typical mineral forming in trap rock type deposits, as an accessory mineral to Zeolites(but arguably often more interesting than the minerals it accompanies, due to it\'s complex structure and relative rarity..). the Malad quarry in Mumbai was active during the 70\'s but like many other traprock quarries in India closed when population expansion overtook these places for housing developments. Even with recent great Babingtonites from China, and older good examples from the North east of the US, the Indian Babingtonites were never plentiful, and have their own unique style. Here you see a nest with lustrous Babingtonite crystals, more bladed or wedge shaped, versus blocky, and overgrown by \"balls\" of the mineral Gyrolite. At the base of the Babingtonite crystals are smaller Quartz crystals. Needless to say this specimen is from an older collection, in this case from a Belgium collector(Jozef Leybaert). This specimen is 123 grams in weight, or 4 3/8 oz. Please see photo\'s for scale, the matrix is about 3 inches in length, and the Babingtonite crystals themselves about 0.6 inch I believe, about 1.6 cm. A rare and good locality specimen.
