POST-CRIMEAN WAR INDIAN REBELLION ROYAL SCOTS 1st BATTALION INFANTRYMAN POSES WITH HIS BRITISH CRIMEAN WAR MUZZLELOADING RIFLE AND A BATTALION " 1 " DEVISE ON HIS KEPI. HIS BELT BUCKLE SHOWS THE OUTLINE OF THE ROYAL SCOTS "X" OVER A CIRCULAR CENTER.
Royal Scots, First and Second battalions saw active service in the Crimean War, with the 1st fighting at the battles of Alma and Inkerman (1854), and both fighting in the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55). After the war, the 1st battalion moved to Ceylon in 1857 and thence to India, returning home in 1870.
(By the late 1850s the carte-de-visite photograph had been taken up in India).
