Afinely painted oval antique porcelain plaque portraying a beautiful brown-hairedwoman and set into the lid of a same shape bronze dore box. Bronze dore is also known as gilt bronze orormolu and is basically a bronze box plated with a metal alloy coating to tryand imitate gold. Thisparticular piece has been in my personal collection since the year 1997 and isa nice quality piece. The box with plaque shown in my photos is the actual itemyou will receive. Please be sure to readthe “Age and Condition” and “Approximate Dimensions” paragraphs below.

Theplaque is very well painted (it is 100% hand painted) by a very skilled artist,but I see no evidence of an artist’s signature on the plaque. The subject is bare-breasted, wearing a diaphanouswrap, and is looking to her right. Thisportrait was painted after an original painting done by Italian born Parisianartist Angelo Asti (1847-1903) and titled “Odalisque”. The portrait is very life-like and juststunning!

Theinside of the box has fabric covered paper inserts that covers the inside. These appear to be glued in place, so I didnot try to remove them. For this reason,I am unable to see if the plaque is marked in any way. However, from experience, I would expect theplaque to have been made by one of the Hutschenreuther firms in Germany. Ifind no identifying markings of any type on the metal box.

Age and Condition

Circa1900.

Itis in very good original condition. Pleaselook closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description ofthis item. Everything appears to me tobe original and intact. I see no chips,flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the porcelain plaque. I did not remove the plaque from the frame,and it appears to have no visible signs of wear or use. I will mention is some tarnish and discolorationto the metal box as well as some age-related wear and signs of use that areconsistent with the age of the box. I will also mention that there is some unevenness, warping,or denting to the underside of the box and also a dent to the side. Otherwise, I see no dents, dings, or splitsto the metal. The box opens andcloses as it should; the hinge is a bit wobbly but the lid latches shut crisplyas it should. I made no attempt to inany way to clean the box. The fabriccovered paper interior shows some wear, some signs of age and somesoiling. Please keep in mind the photosmay be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10times bigger in the photos than it really is.

Pleasenote: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not amark on the piece. It will be eitherjust to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on theright side of the photo.

Approximate Dimensions

Thevisible part of the porcelain plaque itself in the box is about 2.25” (5.7 cm) topto bottom by about 1.875” (4.8 cm) left to right. Overall, the box is about 3” (7.6 cm) inlength by about 2.5” (6.4 cm) in width by about 1.25” (3.2 cm) in overall thickness.
