The paintings were unveiledat the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC onFebruary 12, 2018.Both portraits mark the first time twoAfrican-American artists were commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery.

Barack Obama by KehindeWiley, oil on canvas, the painting depicts President Obama sitting in a chairseemingly floating among foliage. The foliage is described as \"chrysanthemums(theofficial flower of Chicago),jasmine(symbolic of Hawaii where thepresident spent most of his childhood) andAfrican blue lilies(alludingto the president\'s late Kenyan father).\"Reacting to the unveiling ofhis portrait President Obama said: \"How about that? That\'s prettysharp\".The Washington Postdescribed the painting as\"not what you\'d expect and that\'s why it\'s great\".

Michelle LaVaughn Robinsonby Amy Sherald, oil on linen,dominating the composition is Mrs. Obama’smonumental dress. Designed by Michelle Smith, for her label Milly, and selectedfor the portrait by Mrs. Obama, Sherald, and Mrs. Obama’s stylist, the dress issymbolic, referencing the former first lady’s modernity andapproachability.
