B25B as Doolittle Tokyo Raider–McClellan Field, March, 1942:

The 2500lb Bendix belly turret was scrapped. A 60gal neoprene bag was placed in lower turret hole and another in the bomb bay – increasing fuel capacity from 650 gal to 1100 gals. New propellers increased the airspeed by as much as 55 mph.

Next, 230 lbs of Liaison radios and antennas were replaced by RDF with frequencies for fields in China. Last, addition of the Sperry A2 auto pilot converting Norden bomb sight ‘straight and level’ function to ‘heading and altitude.’ The Norden itself was replaced by Greening’s 20 cent ‘Mark Twain.

Eglin AFB ‘try-outs’ showed it could be done. Then on to Alameda Naval Air Station - just outside of San Francisco Bay 1 April, 1942. Next stop: Hornet. You know ‘the rest of the story.’ The airplane on display at the USAF museum is a B25D rebuilt by North American to the configuration of a B25B used on the Tokyo Raid.

Reference: noted AFBs and published Russian photos of York’s B25B 40-2242 in Vladivostok. ‘3’ is apparently ‘short’ for Russian ‘эскорт’ (escort).

B25C/D Skip Bomber, Strafer–Pappy Gunn’s ‘folly’ resulted indevastation to Japanese targets in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa until the end of the war. The B25C/Ds bunches of .50cal MGs and ‘parafrags’ revolutionized the air war in the Pacific.B25D was built in Kansas City Ks. Similar B25C was built in Inglewood CA. 4000 were built for WW2.

B25H Gunshiplearning from Pappy Gunn’ Strafer, B25H came from the factory with a M5 75mm cannon and at least 10 forward firing .50cal Browning M2s. B25H moved the top turret forward, and added a pair of .50s in the tail. H also could hold eight 5 inch HVAR rockets, and carry a 3,000lb payload.

B25J Mitchell Bomberthe epitome of B25 as bomber combined the hitting power of a B25H with carry capacity of a medium bomber. B25J was active internationally through the 1960s and over Papua until 1975.

PBJ1H Marine Raiderfast and deadly - was fitted with thelargeTiny Timrocket-powered warhead and torpedo in anti ship role.Many had LORAN. Marines had 8 forward firing .50cal Browning M2 guns, 8-12 5 inch HVAR rockets, and could carry 3,000lb of torpedoes, bombs, or ‘para-frags. PBJ1H retained the tail gun position, but lost the not needed top turret.
