Hi,I have a very nice photo of a US Navy Destroyer out of the famous aviation author William T Larking\'s collection.
DescriptionOriginal B/W 8X10 Photo of the US Navy Destroyer, the USS Frank Knox. It is an original photo and has a William T Larkins stamp on the back.
HistoryThe USS Fort Knox, a Gearing Class Destroyer, was commissioned in December of 1944. She was sent to the Pacific and saw action in the final carrier raids on Japanese Home Islands in June of 1945. She was present at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. She was sent to her home port of San Diego. This photo was taken on September 26, 1947. Since there aren\'t any suspension bridges that I know of in the Port of San Diego, it only makes sense that this is the Golden Gate Bridge. If someone believes other, drop me a line.The USS Frank Knox then was sent to Korea where she saw action and then into Vietnam. She was decommissioned in 1971 and then was sent to the Greek Navy where she was renamed. She was then decommissioned in 1992 and was finally sunk in target practice in 2001.Now a little bit about William T Larkin. Larkin was well known in the aviation circles and he got his start just before WWII. He served 3 years in the Army Airforce during WWII and then became heavily involved in photography. He also contributed to three books on military aviation, all in California, where he lived in Oakland. If you look at the photo I took of the nine books he worked on, you will see the three I am talking about. There is a museum in Oakland called the Oakland Aviation Museum. It was no coincidence that Larkin took a major interest in those areas. I haven\'t look at the military books, but chances are you might see the B/W photo of the USS Frank Knox in it. Larking passed away on September 9, 2021, at the age of 99, and of COVID of all things.I have a pretty large collection of Larkins aviation photos that I will be listing soon.Also of interest was Larkins friend, a famous fellow aviation enthusiast, author and photographer, Peter M Bowers. Bowers himself has written numerous books on aviation and specialized in Japanese WWII aircraft.I will ship this anywhere for $8.99. The photo will come wrapped in its own archival safe sleeve and will be backed by acid free archival card stock. It will be well protected from bending during shipment. I pack these very carefully and take pride in my methods. It will come in an new sturdy photo mailer. Read the shipping policy below if you want more info. I don\'t try to profit on my shipping. I just try to break even. Sometimes I do, others I don\'t. Read my reviews. I have several that mention how good my packaging is.Note about shipping and the difference between USPS First Class Large Envelope and USPS Ground Advantage. The first class letter is definitely cheaper but the moment you put a do not bend sticker on it, it becomes a package and has to be sent by USPS Ground Advantage and/or USPS Priority Mail. Can some sellers get away with mailing this First Class? Yes, but it could also cost them a surcharge and/or a delay in shipping. I ship photos through USPS Ground Advantage or USPS Priority only. It\'s worth the little extra charge.
I do combine shipping so please offer on more photos!!!The best thing about my packaging? They are easy to open! They come packed in a sturdy rip open cardboard mailer with no tape over the rip!!! How many times have you received a package only to spend ten minutes trying to open it without destroying the contents!!! No extra tape, glue, staples, or my worst fear, items shoved between two pieces of cardboard with tape on every edge requiring a surgeons scalpel to open it!!!
