Avontuur Railway #17, #147, South Africa Narrow Gauge 8/79, 8 Kodachrome 35mm Slides. On a trip in August 1979, when the Avontuur Railway was a dynamic enterprise, this photographer managed to catch action at four locations during a day-long visit, two of which are offered heret. And what a catch! Four locomotives on the 2 foot narrow gauge (standard gauge in South Africa is “Cape Gauge” of 3\'6\'), two of which are included here. All four that were encountered were 2-8-2 of the NG15 Class, the #17 the oldest group still in operation at the time. Though Garratts were supposed to be used on the line, one was never encountered that day. This set of eight (8) original Kodachrome 35mm transparencies catch the #17 (Henschel 1931) approaching and leaving Krankeel River, growing by several cars in the process (6 slides). The other two photos catch a light engine move of #147 (Henschel 1959) near Haarleem). The first site is one of the oldest classes of narrow gauge 2-8-2 locomotives and the second one of the newest on the same August 13, 1979 day.
One of many narrow gauge (2 foot) railways that existed in South Africa, mainly along the Indian Ocean coastal region, the Avonturr Railway is a closed line (though most of the track still exists) extending from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) to Avonturr. It is the longest 2-foot gauge railroad in the country at 285 kilometers (about 177 miles) extending through the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces.. With the economics of these railroads changing in the1980-1990 period, freight that once supported them has moved to highways. Some attempt has been made to maintain small portions as tourist railroads, but with very limited success, including the popular Apple Express on this line. The transparencies are protected in 35mm clear plastic storage sleeve. add $2.90 S&H via First Class Mail. Great Britain, Ireland & Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa, Japan add U.S. $7.15 for S&H, including currency exchange fees. [Unfortunately, increased their fees to better than 15%, including S&H, so I must raise S&H fees.]
