This unusual, heavy antique, iron ashtray is easily over 100 years old
It is a classical theme, possibly early art deco
May be French, as the family it came through lived there around 1909
It appears to have been cast in two pieces, then attached at the stem between the pieces, making it look like an urn from the side
Very sturdy and handsome
The base is decorated with acanthus leaves, a symbol of immortality, longevity, rebirth and healing
The rectangular compartment on top is for a small box of matches
Weighs 1 pound 12 ounces
Base measures 4 7/8 inches by 4 1/8 inch
Circular ashtray diameter is 3 1/2 inches
