KEEP READING FOR MORE ON THE COLLECTION!!!!As collectors pass on, their collections get recycled andmay come back to the market. There havebeen many notable collections assembled over time and as information is easierto obtain and a wider resale market occurs because of the e-markets, we allhave a chance to share in these. I have been fortunate enough to acquire many pieces from the noted collector, Joseph M. “JAY” Massaro ofTexas. For a long time he wrote numerous insignia articles, helped collectors, attended shows, and authored a book on Army AirForce Distinctive Insignia. He also helped the collector club, ASMIC (AmericanSociety of Military Insignia Collectors) with his many articles in their publications.

Massaro was a 2nd generation West Point graduatewho served in the military for 21 years as well. Starting as a child and with his fathers help, he collected insignia for 62years. His collection was extensive but limited toRegular Army units. He mounted the majority of his collection on large illustration boards of 450 pieces per board. Therewere more than 11,000 crests in the collection. Hepassed away over 15 years ago and his collection was put on loan in 2009to the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin, Texas. In late 2019, the Museum returned thecollection to the family in order to use the space for other displays. Thefamily decided to sell the collection once it was returned. Some branches were sold off in total and some were broken up to sell individually.

Since there are many people familiar with his book, his collection, hundreds of articles, and countless hours of assistance, I decided to go the extra length to makesure people would have a way to own a piece of the collection and to documentit as such. Each piece from the collection is documented, front and backpictured, recorded and guaranteed to be a part of the collection in my files.

RECEIVING a color Certificate of Authenticity (COA) (sample shown above), showing the detailsand picture of the piece IS NOW OPTIONAL AND YOU MUST REQUEST IT BEFORE I SEND THE ITEM.

The illustration board pieces are included with the sale of the DUI (many are not in great shape or exhibit writing or damage from being sold off). Smaller boards were also used for pieces that were obtained after the verylarge boards were created and account for even more variations of the unit insignia. Therefore there are two styles of board shown in my pictures and will be denoted aslarge (blue backing) or small board (white backing) pieces in the sale notes. There will be inexpensive pieces and there will be more costlier and unusual pieces.

Our hope is that in the future, more people will detailcollections like this somehow and large notable collection pieces can exist far intothe future for more collectors. Hopefully, it can even create a niche for some collectors to have at least one piece in their collection or to collect as many as they can. Many of the pieces may have been used in the articles that Massaro wrote, so you can watch for these against what I offer and, if successful, have further provenance of where the piece came from. The buyer should also print out the sale pageand keep for their records of sale and provenance.
