Description:This arcade is at the ground level of the Procuratie Vecchie, the long building that forms the north side of the Piazza San Marco in Venice.As the name suggests, it is the oldest of the three Procuratie that define the piazza, the others being the Procuratie Nuove and the Procuratie Nuovissime.

The Procuratie Vecchie was built in the early sixteenth century to replace an earlier building destroyed by fire.Per Wikepedia, it was “the first major public building in Venice to be erected in a purely classical style.”Upstairs were rental apartments that always commanded high rents because of the location.The ground floor spaces opening on the arcade were rented out for stores, workshops and, later, coffeehouses.

In this view the camera looks along the arcade in a westerly direction, with shops on the right and sunlight pouring into the arcade from the left, which is the open piazza.The angle of the shadows of the columns tells us this was taken early in the morning – as does the absence of human activity.
