The word Kelsch is a Germanic word, taken from "Kolnisch Blau", which refers toa plant grown primarily as animal feed, (whose leaves and stems were the sourcesof an old blue dye) For centuries ( as early as the 7th century) the plant, along with hempand linen, was the main crop cultivated in eastern France and neighboringGermany. In the 18th century, the word kelsch came to describe thehand-woven linen and hemp cloths made in the French region of Alsace, usually woven by poor rural farmers. These textiles werehand loomed on narrow looms, and seamedtogether by their selvages to form wider widths for larger textiles. Whenpillow cover and mattress covers were created using these wonderful fabrics,they were sew together in large or small envelopes with openings for stuffing. These textiles wereeither stuffed with straw or feathers for use as mattress covers, duvet coversand pillow cases ~*~
~~*~ This beautiful pillow cover dates from the late 1800's. ~A lovely cotton kelsh check in a beautiful red and indigo blue . The backing is a wonderful antique homespun cotton. . Ties for closing ~~ ( kelsch J33)
MEASUREMENTS : This textile measures 33 inches wide by 47 inches long ~ ( but of course has two sides )
CONDITION:Freshly laundered and ready to use!There are some storage marks on this piece that should wash beautifully however there are some marks on the backing that may not fully wash~ Can be machine washed and hung to dry ~*~
