Antique Villeroy and Boch Mettlach Jasperware Vase

Dimensions are : 4 3/16" high , 2" wide at its 'waist' , 3 5/16" in diameter at the mouth , with a base diameter of 2 9/16" . Material is 2 tone matte finish porcelain with a white glazed interior . Manufacturer is Villeroy and Boch of Mettlach , Germany . This small vase was produced c. 1860 . Villeroy and Boch was founded in 1748 by Francois Boch and his 3 sons and began by producing crockery pieces . In 1836 Jean-Francois Boch merged the company with the stoneware producer Nicholas Villeroy . This merger created one of the first global corporations of the 19th century . While day to day operations are no longer run by the descendants of the founding family the company still exists today , the family is still in its employ , it appeared on the German stock exchange beginning in 1990 and the family in fact controls much of the stock . It is considered by many as the finest producer of porcelain pieces . This 164 year old vase is pure Jasperware . The images represented are somewhat Bacchanalian with 4 twisting grapevines rising from the bottom culminating in lush grape leaf foliage while creating 4 'cartouches' each occupied by a winged cherub possibly representing one each of the 4 seasons . It's a wonderful piece with none of the typical cracks ( it will hold water ) although there are a few insignificant flaws ( examine the photos where we've ensured that any and all minor flaws are fully evident ) which simply reflect its age . The exterior bottom of the vase bears the 19th century 3 dimensional symbol ( which is actually an armorial crest featuring a central shield bearing a V B with eagle supporters ) of Villeroy and Boch ( see photos ). This is a beautiful example of a very rare piece but we've priced it very competitively .
