Antique Victorian Wedgwood Blue Calendar Tile c. 1880, April. Framed:

This Victorian era, antique wood-framed 6" earthenware tile (c.1880), was designed by Helen J.A. Miles for Josiah Wedgwood Etruria. This square tile features a pictorial representation of the month of April, with beautiful shades of blue.The dimensions of this item, including the frame are 9 1/2" by 9 1/2". The frame opening is 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". The date of the frame is unknown but it is not new. It may be contemporary to the tile given the style and the small, rectangular, flat-headed nails holding the tile in place.
The back of the tile has the words Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Etruria and what appears to be a 7 in blue. The 7 is similar to the 7 on the back of the March tile that I have listed. Most likely they were made around the same time. The back of the frame has remnants of paper than once covered or partially covered the tile. There is some discoloration on the back of the tile which I believe was caused by glue or paste used to secure the paper backing. Note the back of one edge of the tile where there is what appears to be chips but the edges are smooth so this may have happened during the manufacturing process. It does not affect the front of the tile. The frame and the tile weigh approximately 4 pounds.
