146 years ago, this beautiful spice tin sat on a grocer’s counter and provided shoppers with as much product that they needed. This one, has a rotating cylinder in a window at the top that is changeable depending upon the contents of the bin.
In the photos shown, you can see that baking powder was currently on offer. The cylinder also has cinnamon, ginger and other dry goods. On the inside of the lid is the original instructions for changing the item shown in the window.
Although the overall condition of the tin is excellent, the patina is such that some of the background color has worn away over time.
What is still very strong is the central graphic with the young Alpine musician playing for the young girl. The colors are outstanding and the condition of the graphic is amazing. Look at the closeup… it’s almost a miracle that it survived in such condition.
The spice tin has its original white porcelain knob and opens at the top and bottom. The name St. Pure is at the top and 2 medals are lithoed on the lower door with a seated Victory figure and a the words “National Exhibition Philadelphia MDCC” and “Awarded by United States Centennial Commission”. These are also in excellent condition.
The top is printed Houton? Bros. Makers and a series of 3 patent dates ending with Nov. 13, 1877.
The tin measures 11-3/4” high by 9-1/2” wide by 7” deep.
I wrap with copious amounts of bubble wrap and ship insured priority mail.
