Antique Swiss Cylinder Music Box Working Multiple Songs; Presidential Provenance:
$295.00

I bought this antique Swiss music box several years ago at sale. It was presented as having belonged to Lou Hoover, wife of the late president Herbert.

There’s no hallmark or maker’s name, but having collected these music boxes for many years, it’s most likely Mermode or Paillard.

The box has been refinished in a dark shellac. Very good overall condition— no cracks or other damage is visible. The front and top have rectangular stringing, and it should look beautiful once the dark finish is removed.

The comb and cylinder are both in very good condition. Pins on the brass cylinder are fully intact, and there are no missing teeth or tips on the comb.

The box plays well considering its age. Spring drive with Geneva Stop is functional. The transport is a bit slow and could use a good cleaning. The box is out of tune, but the tunes are recognizable and should come back perfectly once the comb is professionally cleaned and tuned.

The change/repeat tab on the bar that makes the present song repeat or advance to the next is a couple millimeters short. This can be remedied by either extending the tab, or repositioning the bar the tab is on a millimeter or two toward the rear of the case.

The cylinder is made of brass and is in excellent original condition. A few minor damper squeaks can be heard, though these should also be resolved after servicing.

I would date the box to the last quarter of the 19th century.

A newspaper clipping and index card came with the box— this may not provide definitive proof of prior ownership; images of Herbert Hoover and his wife Lou could prove the provenance if an image showing them in the same room as the box can be found.

This is a great example of Swiss music boxes made throughout the 19th century. The industry was effectively closed down with the First World War.

With alittle attention, this music box could be very beautiful. As it is, there’s nothing wrong with it that can’t be taken care of without much work.
