Here is a wonderful old Sioux/ Plains horn club. It is definitely very old with tiny irregular seed beads in a Salt-&-Pepper scatter beard pattern wrapped all around the handle and red trade cloth . It is damaged with the head held on by a nail ,dropped beading, and gouges in the horn.It is still very evocative and beautiful on the wall even with the damage, it wouldn\'t be hard to restore the bead loss if it troubled the eye, but I have enjoyed it as is. There is a small mystery concerning this piece. The horns are jet black and they are either soaked in some sort of paint or they are resin mould? artificial replica horns. Traditionally these would have been buffalo horns of course. So ,the question is why does an authentic obviously old club have these horns? Among ideas I had was that maybe it was a battlefield relic with horn replacement?Or, it was made for a souvenir where people were squeamish about real bone? Was somebody at a trading post moulding horns during the material scarce reservation period?Or was it part of an internationally touring Wild West show where real bone could not cross customs?Mysterious....but asyou can see, a genuine 1800s (?) antiqueIt is soulful and sure to please
