Here is an awesome grouping. A set of plaques depicting Italy, pre WW1 and after WW1. This has to do with the ReCapture of the Northern Port Cities, of Trieste, and Trentino.

Before WW1, these cities were under the Austro-Hungarian regime. Italy was originally part of the Triple Alliance, with Germany and Austria- Hungary. But Italy was at odds with Austro-Hungaria, because of the loss of these 2 important strategic Cities.

The US and the Allies, promised to return these 2 Cities to the Italian Crown. If Italy would join the Allies. And Italy did.

As promised, when the Allies won Victory in WWI, these Port Cities were returned to the Italian Crown, in 1920.

The 1st plaque on the left, shows Italia rallying the Troops. The Cities of Trieste and Trento, are shown as the Women, cowering to the Austro-Hungarian forces, behind them.

The 2nd plaque, shows the Italian Military Forces, presenting Trieste and Trentino, back to the Italian Crown. The shield of the House of Savoy, is laying by the Italian Monarch. Each of the Women are wearing a Sash. The closest one has the name Trieste written across it. The other sash, I can make out the NTO, of Trento. Photo # 6 shows the Italian Crown, with a hole, at her hand. I believe a carved Ivory or exotic wood hand, would have been inserted, to show Prosperity, or Giving.

I have attributed these to Giovanni Capranesi. He was hired by the Italian Government, to design Banknotes, and War Propaganda posters. He died in 1921. So, I believe they were made between 1920, and 1921.

Each plaque is 17\" in length, and 11\" in height. They are heavy. Approx 10 pounds each. They are sculpted in 3D. Each one was cast in 2 separate pieces, and joined together. You can see the seams joining each plaque, on the reverse. This package will weigh about 30 pounds.

I believe he was commissioned to make these plaques. It depicts the WW1 Victory Lighthouse, that was built in Trieste from 1923-1927. But this depiction shows remarkable differences than the finished project. Notably, the Angel in this one, has 1 foot on the Ball, and 1 foot off! The finished project, shows the Angel with both feet on the Ball. But these are very rare glimpses into Italy during WW1.

Very good Antique condition. Some small holes in bronze, Casting flaws. 1st photo shows more true color. Unsigned as I can tell. But definitely looks like his work. Maybe his last.

This would be great to display for that Military Historian!
