Liberation wars:The Kingdom of Prussia declared war on the French Empire led by Napoleon Bonaparte on 17 March 1813. Prussia and his allies use the defeat of Napoleon in the 1812 Russian campaign to end the French period and to achieve the liberation of Germany from the French occupation.
Princess Marianne of Prussia appealed in 1813 to all women of Prussia to exchange their gold ornaments for a brooch or a ring of iron with the inscription GOLD I GOT FOR IRON. Thus she supported the call of Rudolph Werkmeister, published in Berlin on March 31, 1813. This request has been fulfilled many times. Iron jewelery became the fashion of all patriot women, thus showing their contribution to the support of the wars of liberation.
First World War:The call was repeated during the First World War. Wedding rings, brooches and jewelry rings were issued to the citizens willing to donate. Some of them were decorated with the Iron Cross.Despite (or because of) their voluntariness, the action generated considerable social pressure. The social control was simple: who wore the iron jewelry, had proved to be a patriot, who continued to show gold, lost prestige.
The appeal also affected the assets of associations, parishes and government agencies. The Cultural History Museum Magdeburg shows the 1917 made iron official chain of the Lord Mayor.
From 1916, the Reichsbank rewarded the sale of jewelry or the exchange of gold for paper money (which quickly lost value) with a medal. Precious metals such as gold and silver were war and foreign exchange-important raw materials. The medals designed by Hermann Hosaeus were published in many variants and very high editions. They consist of blackened iron, have a weight of 16.4 to 20.4 g and have a diameter of 39 to 41 mm.
