Description

Rare Antique 18th century Polish Hussar sword-saber with a massive iron stirrup hilt of typical polish hussar form comprising a knuckle bow which is not connected to the pommel. The crossguard with leaf shape thumb ring and a pair of langets modeled quillon domed almond shape pommel with shaped back piece, vertically fluted wooden grip covered with leather.
A long, slightly curved massive blade, cut on each face with a broad full-length fuller and a short slender fuller along the back-edge, engraved on both sides with a trace of gold gilding with a mounted Hussar brandishing a sword and the motto \"Vivat Husar\" above. (Vivat is Latin for ‘Long Live’) The spine of the blade engraved with date 1780.REFERENCES: These types of engravings are typically on 18th century Polish blades. Please see following references:1. Also, the 18 century Polish hussar sword from the collection of a Lithuanian state museum with a related hilt to this sword has the blade engraved with a mounted Hussar brandishing a sword, and the motto \"Vivat Husar”.Is possible that the iron hilt is older than the 18th century blade, however this form of the hussar hilt was made in Poland from the middle of the 17th century to the second halve of the 18th century.
CONDITION: Showing age and usage, engravings slightly worn with remains of gold gilding. The blade has some forging flaws on the rim of the back of the blade in the lower part and combat notches on the edge of the blade. The leather on the grip is very dry and slightly worn. The engravings are slightly worn. In Excellent condition for an antique combat sword that is over 240 years old.Please see the photos, they are a part of the length: 98.5 cm (34.13 inches).
Length of the blade: 84.8 cm (29.29 inches).
Width of the blade at the widest point: 3.6 cm (1.5 inches).
Thickness of the blade spine: 8.72 mm (0.35 inches).
