Up for sale is this Antique Philadelphia Contribution ship cast metal fire mark on its original wooden shield plaque. The fire marks i have listed came from a large collection, and they are not reproductions .These are made of lead and not cast iron, and this mark and description can be seen on the Philidelphia Fireman\'s Hall Museum website. Go to collections tab and then fire marks. This mark has lead hands mounted on wood and came about when Ben Franklin and volunteer firemen were the principal organizers of the city\'s first insurance company in 1952 . The symbol of the four crossed hands on wood suggests the idea of mutual support and the company\'s relationships with the volunteer fire companies. In the event of a fire, it was thought the companies badge or mark wood enlist the help of fellow mutual policyholders who share equally in losses and the four-handed fireman\'s carry would remind the volunteer fire companies that fellow volunteers were policy holders .In addition, gilded hands on a black painted board as advertising for the new insurance company. The wooden plaque is dry and light and has a previous repair but seems solid. There is some wear to the original black paint and hands also missing one iron spike where the crack on the board was.
