This late18th- early19thcentury oil on canvas detail after El Greco’s 17th centuryMasterpiece, “Christ Takes Up The Cross” is beautifully painted and measures 15½” x 13 ½” framed; 13” x 11” actual.Jesus is depicted gazing prayerfully upward to His Father with themassive weight of the cross dominating his left shoulder and his headilluminated by a square aura. Thebrushwork is delicate and the colors are rich and true to the original. It is mounted on an early stretcher that wascleaned (sanded) and re-coated during a restoration and cleaning sometime inthe last 50 years and the surface of the work is very clean with no significantin-paint in the figure. The canvas hasstable overall craquelure with some accompanying inpaint and there are scufflines with scratch losses in the upper left and lower right corner from anearlier frame. Its current carved, giltand ebonized wood frame with red bole ground is from the middle 1900’s andcomplements the work nicely. Spanish orItalian in origin, it was most likely created as a devotional image for a grandtour traveler. The canvas is very oldand appears to be hand loomed.
