Georges Lamaille. Since he spent some time in Melbourne, Australia in the 1880s. He formed a partnership with Emile Gay, forming the company of E Gay Lamaille. They marked their clocks EGL in an oval (presumably a contraction of their initials (E)mile (G)ay and (G)eorges (L)amaille. While most surviving clocks seem to be carriage clocks, they made/sold a wide variety of clocks - in 1894 they were described as "an old firm long celebrated for every type of the better-class English and French clocks".
Emile Gay moved to London in 1860/61. He initially partnered with Adolphe Vicarino before Lamaille bought Vicarino out. Lamaille was initially based in France, but became something of a world citizen. He travelled to Australia and displayed clocks, bronzes and other items at the Sydney, Melbourne and Perth Exhibitions of 1880/1, and set up branches of the company in both Sydney and Melbourne (as importers of French goods, including bronzes, crystal and clocks) before returning to France around 1884. The Australian businesses seemed to fail shortly after Lamaille left, and they stopped advertising in 1888. Georges Lamaille also appears to have exhibited at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893, at which time he was aged 49 according to immigration records.
The firm of E Gay Lamaille remained in business until at least 1903, and eventually became E Gay, Lamialle and West, "Clock Manufacturers and Importers", but West went bankrupt in 1910. Possibly at this time, or before, the firm was bought by H Williamson Ltd.
