This is a rare, excellent condition Navajo Rug with WhirlingLogs, 6 point stars, and arrows in groups of 4. This is one of the most intricateversions of Whirling Logs rug you will find.The weave is tight and was carefully placed, demonstrating the work of ahighly skilled Navajo artisan. TheWhirling Logs and stars are a sacred symbol of the Navajo. The symbols come in groups of 4, representingthe four sacred mountains, Blanca Peak and Mount Hesperus in Colorado, MountTaylor in New Mexico, and the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona. The colors have not faded over time due tocareful storage, and no mouth damage can be found. This rug has been in the family for over 50years and purchased from a large collection of Navajo artifacts. It measure 30” x 64”…saddle blanket.Before 1910, no cotton background Natural dyes created in 19th century Geometric shapes created in 19th century Twisted side selvage cord Most Navajo rugs do not have a fringe Raised outline around 1870 Thick/heavy weave, wool and cotton, no fringes, selvagecords Whirling logs ended in 1930s Until the late 1800s, when J. Lorenzo Hubbell and J.B.Moore opened their trading posts in Arizona and New Mexico, Navajos portrayedthe swastika solely in their religious ceremonies in the form of sandpaintings. But by 1896, with prodding by Hubbell and Moore, the symbolproliferated on Navajo rugs. In 1940, in response to Hitler\'sregime, the Navajo, Papago, Apache and Hopi people signed a whirling logproclamation.
