Antique Mold Blown Glass Syrup Pitcher Pewter Lid 1800s Victorian Molasses Jug:
$145.00

RARE ANTIQUE VICTORIANGLASS SYRUP PITCHER
Thick, substantial mold blown glass with all over pattern and bold applied glass handle from mid to late 19th century. Pewter lid is hinged and features decorative scalloped shell at hinge. Scalloped lid decoration echoes the soft, rounded shapes of the daisy flowers and ridges.Patent stamp inside lid, shows original patent date of Sept. 24, 1837 and re-issue date that appears to be April 21,1868 (not 100% on that, see pics).Nineteenth-century Americans who could not afford refined white sugar would use a sweet alternative such as molasses or maple syrup. Syrup jugs or pitchers with dripless metal pouring spouts held the slow-pouring, sugary liquid. These pressed or mold-blown glass containers were a common fixture on many Victorian Americans\' tables.Measures approximately 7.5 inches tall at highest point of lid. Base has 3.5 inch diameter. Lid is still affixed and hinge is functional.
Antique condition with no cracks or chips. Metal, pewter, lid is discolored from age, shows wear and has a small dent and deformation on top as well as some white residue on one edge (about 1/4\" long, not sure if that is damage or if it will come off). Interior glass could use cleaning. Not sure if lower handle on left side isslightlydamaged or just different than the other side due to handmade nature. Handle looks intact, but has a rougher, sharper feel there. Please see pics for condition details.
This is a very cool, old, glass jug. I have held onto it for a while, but its not really something I normally collect. Maybe you do?
