For sale I have a beautifulAntique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Delft Series German Beer Stein #5006/5189 c.1903. Description:Beautiful and impressive antique German beer stein made in 1903 by the most famous firm of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach.
The steinwas a part of a Historimus-inspired revival of \"Delft\" series that created beer steins after the famous Delft production. The series are quite rare in the US where the most popular imports were etched steins. The steins in Delft series were hand-paintedwith shades of blue on white and havebeautiful pewter in style of 18th century wares.This stein is made of porcelain and decorated with a portrait of a man in 17th century clothes holding a pokal in one hand and a white-clay tobacco pipe in another. The portrait resembles many such paintings by Frans Hals - I don\'t know if this is a copy of a real painting or just a portrait in style of Frans Hals.The white clay Dutch pipes were extremely popular all over Europe and Americas in the 1600s - the Golden Age of Dutch art. The lid is pewter - the Delft series steins were only made with several types of pewter lids.Marked with underglazed hand-painted \"V&B M\" mark andimpressed 5006 model number along with \"5189\" decoration number, 37 quality control number and03 date number for the year of 1903. There are some other hand-painted number that most likely associated with the artist-painter signature.The steinis in excellent condition with some age-related wear. There are no cracks or chips. The lid sits tight, but does have a couple of whammies as shown in my photos.The stein stands 8 1/4\" tall to the top of the thumblift finial.
