A wonderful glazed colorful Large JUG, with sealed cork, large capacity of 2-3 Gallons.

Hefty in weight, and perhaps long ago filled with spirits, wine, or water.

It\'s story remains a mystery. BUT it\'s origins can be uncovered.

With the Hand written ID Label on its lip, a bit of it\'s Irish history can be explored:

Monica Duffs:

For over 150 yearsuntil its final closure in 1986 the firm of Monica Duff and Company
played a leading role in the business life of Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon,Irelandand surrounding areas. Originally started around 1830 as a small shop by ThomasDillon it grew over the years to become one of the largest businesses in thearea.By the end of the1840s Thomas Dillon\'s small grocery shop had grown to twice its original size.Before his death Thomas handed over the business to his widowed sister, MonicaDuff, and she in turn passed it on to her daughter Anne Deane, another widow.Anne Deane made theshop into the town\'s biggest employer, a role it held for the following 100years. A drapery department had been added to the original grocery shop, aswell as an ironmonger\'s store, a boot, shoe and leather warehouse, bakery and aspacious yard dealing in guano manures, farm seeds, animal feed-stuffs, fueland builders supplies. There was also a thriving farm at Kilcolman on thetown\'s edge.Monica Duff & Cowas also trading in beers, wines, spirits, and tobacco, retail and wholesale. Latera mineral water plant would be set up. By the 1880s the firm had its own Mondufbrand labelling almost every grocery and household product.

It\'s history is closely associated with that of the Dillon family many ofwhose members played a prominent role in Irish political life.John Blake Dillon was one of the founders of the Young Ireland movement. Hisson John was leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party while John\'s son Jamesserved as Minister of Agriculture in two coalition governments and later becameleader of the Fine Gael party.
