Rare and unusual piece. Possibly one of a kind. Hand carved from one piece of wood retaining the tree\'s original bark. Bottom has a thin apparently cardboard covering likely covering what is likely extra gluing the wood section over where the bark connects protecting it from chipping away from the wood and covering where the glass ink well, itself, was inserted and sealed into place. I draw this conclusion from examining the ink well top where this appears to have been done but in this case to prevent the bark from chipping further from the wood from which it was removed so that part could serve as a stopper. Diamond shaped bottom. Pen holder and ink well sit on what is designed to look like an antique water well making it interesting even as a piece of art. Rustic and primative. Very good condition with some aging of the black finish over the bark exterior every but where it does not cover (the ink well stopper and its top center. Ink well, itself is glass likely inserted from the bottom then sealed into the wood and its bark. Quill pen tip shows slight rusting and its body has a tiny nick that is easily covered with old english. A unique conversation piece estimated to have been made between 1890 and 1910. Well maintained. 8\" long x 4 1/2\" wide x 6\" high.
