And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “ Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be spoken against; and a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
— Luke 2:34-35The image of “Softening of Evil Hearts” most likely originates from South-West Russia, however, there is no historical information about it [1] .
On the icon, the Mother of God is depicted with seven swords thrust into her heart : three on the right and left, and one below. The number seven signifies the fullness of grief, sorrow, and heartache experienced by the Mother of God in her earthly life [2] . Sometimes the Eternal Child is also depicted on the knees of the Mother of God [1] .
The Seven-arrow icon of the Mother of God also has a similar image . The only difference is that the swords on it are arranged somewhat differently - three on one side and four on the other [1] .
The celebration of the icon takes place on All Saints Sunday (the first Sunday after Pentecost ).
