FROM MADEIRA WITH LOVE....!
Found in an estate liquidationon the island of Madeirain Portugal, that of a retired antiques dealer.
19th Century Grand Tour Memento, Temple of Hercules Victor, Rome.
This example was cast in bronze fitted with a marble base. It stands 4 1/4 inches tall and the base measures 3 3/4 inches in diameter.
It is complete, however, in need of restoration. The finial had broken off and was found taped to the underside of the lid. The temple is being offered as found with this flaw.
Additionally, the broken column, original to the actual temple and replicated in the model is a bit loose.
These are the only flaws I could find. The base is free of chips or cracks. The last owner glued felt to the base that I have left in place.
Dating from the mid to late 1800s, research reveals that this miniature temple is a bit harder to find than most.
I am not sure of its original purpose other than being a replica of this famous landmark. Possibly an incense burner. No idea?
