I\'ve always loved this set: \"Grand Dad,\" designed by G(eorge) S(eymour) Allen, per an early Armor Bronze catalogue. I\'ve also seen a set where the name \"Fireside Comfort\" is formed into the backs of the bases, so I\'ll guess that Armor or Allen modified it at some point.
Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
No maker\'s mark which puzzles me - the other sets I\'ve seen or owned had Armor\'s shield logo and a copyright symbol formed into the rocks at opposite ends of the bottom row on the backs. Not found on these, so another guess: those marks were worn away from handling and being rubbed up against books. Notice that one piece still has a legible \"GS Allen\" in the middle of that row, while on the other, it is almost gone. I think that happened to the shield logo.
In any event, there is no question these are Armor Bronze. The company was formed in the late 1800s and was making bookends in NYC at least as early as the 19-teens. Circa 1920.
Condition is excellent. No breaks in the cladding, nothing dented or mashed. Barely any nicks or dings. Paint is original, shows some wear from age and handling but mostly intact and bright. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
7 1/4 inches tall; 6 inches across the back at the base; 4 1/4 inches front to back. Combined weight is just shy of 10 1/2 pounds.
