Antique Germany Cabinet Plate Scene Gilt Gold Guardian Angel 1910 Godparent Gift:
$36.99

Extraordinary Antique Porcelain Cabinet Plate Shallow Bowl from Germany was given as a gift of appreciation to a Godparent / Godparents

Preowned item features a portrait scene in center depicting a Guardian Angel watching over a small Child, who is chasing a toy ball onto a bridge over a stream, with silhouette of a forest and village in background off in the distance.

Scene implies the child has wandered away from safety of home and its mother and is in imminent danger, but will protected and safe because the Angel hovers over him, guarding in protection.

This rare rendition is likely inspired by or possibly even created by the same artist who created the famous Victorian era “Heilige Schutzengel” Holy Guardian Angel by Zabateri, aka Hans Zatzka. That image features 2 children on the bridge instead of one and was mass printed/published by Lindberg.

H. Zabateri aka Hans Zatzka was a prolific Austrian painter in the late 1800s whose works were frequently featured on postcards of the time and mass produced, framed lithograph prints.

This particular image / rendition with just the one toddler is extremely rare and to find it on a porcelain plate is also extraordinarily unusual as well.

Rim is gilded and features German words etched in calligraphy “Buni Paten Gelchenk” translates to English: “A good godparent is a gift.”

Features gold Art Nouveau design of arches and torches pattern framing the center image against a band of jade green. Outer rim also has blocks with gold Laurel and floral crest motif.

This piece would have been a thank you gift given to a godparent at a child’s baptism / christening.

Measures approximately 10” in diameter.

No chips or cracks. Item has light wear patina to gold around edge attributed to age and shelf storage. Doesn’t detract from function or beauty. Displays wonderfully!
