Antique Capped German Beer Stein,Albert Jacob Thewalt,Abschied Trumpeter Scene, Designed by Wilhelm Kamp .5L Art Nouveau Period 1907-1920
This Antique German beer stein depicts the \"Abschied\" (translates to \"Farewell\")Trumpeter with the phrase \"Behut dich Gott, es war so schon gewesen, / behut dich gott, es hat nicht sollen sein,\" depicted on two panels. It translates to \"May god watch over you, it would have been so nice, / may god watch over you, it was not meant to be.\" This stein was manufactured by the Albert Jacob Thewalt, a prominent quality stoneware manufacturer, at some point between 1907 and 1920. The stein mold was designed by Wilhelm Kamp in 1894. Both the scene and the details on the stein are finely made.
The Trumpeter scene is part of Der Trompeter von Sackingen, both an epic poem written by J. Viktor von Scheffel in 1854 and an opera produced in 1884, which tells the star-crossed love story of a lowly trumpeter and the daughter of a nobleman. The stein shows the trumpeter playing a mournful farewell to his love across the Rhine river after he had been chased away by her father. Interestingly this poem was inspired by an actual love story dating back to the 1600\'s in which a young man successfully marries his noble born lover despite the resistance of her family. Their love story is celebrated on a stone grave marker located in St. Fridolin\'s Cathedral in Sackingen.The stein\'s lid is missing most of its thumb tab which looks to have broken away a long time ago. There is also a small but noticeable chip on the base\'s rim. Other than that this stein is in good condition. See pictures for details.
Dimensions: It is approximately 8.5 inches tall (including the lid) with a 4 inch base. It holds .5 liters.
